I actually did some research on this and took into account what a players season averages for hr's, rbi's, and lifetime average, plus how many gold gloves(or how good defensively they were prior to gold glove awards) and how many MVP's the player won, this is what I came up with.

C-Roy Campanella with Johnny Bench 2nd
1B-Albert Pujols with Lou Gehrig 2nd
2B-Jackie Robinson with Rogers Hornsby 2nd
SS-Alex Rodriguez with Ernie Banks 2nd
3B-Mike Schmidt with Brooks Robinson 2nd
LF-Ted Williams with Stan Musial 2nd
CF-Ty Cobb with Joe DiMaggio 2nd
RF-Babe Ruth with Hank Aaron 2nd

I also took into account what era the player played in, Ty Cobb for example only averaged like 7 hr's a year. But all the other players in his era were less. I also didn't give as much stock to the players of that era's extremely high batting averages, in today's game, I believe they would be considerably lower. Anyways, there it is with some fact, some opinion.

It seems stupid. Why not just have a DH for all 9 position players? Forget who's on the field and just put your 9 best hitters in the lineup (and they're not always the players on the field, especially late in the game when a team is ahead and needs defense). What makes the pitcher special? Now we have two people comparing those who don't like the DH to those who wanted to keep the game segregated? If that's the best argument for the DH then we need to trash it tomorrow. This has to be among the worst arguments I've ever heard, baseball or otherwise. The DH doesn't take strategy away but it definitely minimizes the strategy involved. More than one manager who's managed in both the AL and NL have said this, Tony La Russa being the one that immediately springs to mind. I will believe them over anyone on here.

The best starting nine for me would be

c- Johnny Bench
1B-Stan "The Man" Musial
2B-Joe Morgan
3B-Mike Schmidt
SS-Ernie Banks
OF-Willie Mays
OF-Babe Ruth
OF-Hank Aaron
SP-Nolan Ryan

You have the power right there with all those hitters who can drive the ball out of the ballpark. You have good defense in Mays, Schmidt, Bench, Musial, and Morgan. Also Nolan Ryan is one of the greatest strike out pitchers of all time so you know you are probably going to win when he takes the mound.

Personal preference looking at defense and offense. And as you see, I prefer contemporaries because I believe the overall level of players is higher now. Plus post integration, I believe truly offsets the diluting of talent via expansion looking at the black and latin stars. (Pujols, Ramirez, Rodriguez, Bonds, Ortiz, excetera, wouldn't have been allowed to play, and Jeter would probably have been killed). Truly the best players in the world are here.

C) Johnny Bench
1B) Lou Gehrig
2B) Joe Morgan
SS) Alex Rodriguez
3B) Mike Schmidt
LF) Barry Bonds
CF) Willie Mays
RF) Hank Aaron
P) Roger Clemens
