In CA, a taxpayer filing "head of household", under the age of 65, with one dependent needs to file if their gross income is over $25,388.

You need to contact the state IRS office and for federal if you make less than $3000 you're not obligated to pay income tax. Go to www.IRS.gov and look up your local office to find out any tax information.

For federal, head of household, you have to file if your income was over $10,850 if you are under 65, of $12,100 if you're 65 or over. If you had self-employment income though, you'd have to file if your se income was over $400.
