Generally I will do it myself, the one exception is plumbing. Unless it is a simple sink, toliet or valve job, I really dislike plumbing jobs. Simple in theory, often requires re-visits. However electrical, woodworking, floors, walls, tile and most other things I will do myself. Noe there are jobs that require more then one person to do right and I consider the options. example I had to have a pool liner replaced and it was simply more cost effient to hire a crew who did it in a few hours then me and friends goofing with it for 2-4 days.

First I look it over and then I see what needs to be done and how to do it. Over 90% of the time I do it with my own tools and my own skills. The only exceptions in the last few years were for installing a new heavy oak front door and restuccoing the driveway retaining wall and front steps. I knew those would not come out good enough unless an experienced pro handled them. All the rest were within reach of an experienced amateur. The work that I do on the house is fun to do and gives a sense of accomplishment.

make a list of priorities ---what needs to be done ---what you would like done and most important costing ---things that you can do yourself will cost a lot less as you are not paying for labour so in theory you can do a lot more but the time factor is also important generally hired labour is more skilled and can do the job quicker but cost extra --- the final decision can also take into account that you need things to look professional not home made---- so how good are your skills...it can be a lot of fun ---a lot of hard work--- a lot of satisfaction try both ways and see how you go

depends on the project, but after years of DIY repairs, I suggest you contract out any work that takes you more than 2 hours.

A lot depends on your skill and your budget. do it yourself projects can be great learning experiences, but I went two years without a kitchen while I re-did it from the foundation up while living there and working full time and commuting, and getting my degree.

it depends is it something you can do and feel confident doing or will you attempting it make matters worse? ie are we talking a plumbing issue a wiring issue a roof or fix a few clogged pipes and tighten up a few hinges? why try and save 20 dollars to spend 500? good luck

Usually do it myself or with my husband. He likes to do that kind of stuff. If we need help, we will ask, but we always try to help with what we can.
