Dear friend as I am developing early warning system for earthquake and Tsunami I will be able to clear your doubts. Scientist came to under stand about the interior parts of earth only after studying the seismographic picture recorded during earthquakes, Earthquake develops mainly four waves namely P , S, L, R waves. P and S are propagated from the point under the earth called focus. The primary wave will pass through both solid and liquid. But the S wave will pass through solid only. When it touches liquid it gets reflected and the direction will be changed. Other two waves are called surface waves. Traveling in the surface of earth that can not be used to study the internal parts of earth. Therefore the scientist found the types of the core of earth after studying the seismographic pictures only. You can visit my following sites to know more on this subject.

This was determined by the measurement of earth quakes from different locations. Shock waves from earth quakes travel at different speeds through different substances and different phases (liquid or solid).

An earth quake measured a short distance from the epicenter only travels through solid rock. Get far enough away and the sound appears to go through liquid (likely the sound waves slow down more than they would through solid only material). Get on the other side of the planet and the sound waves have not slowed enough to have gone through a liquid only core. Something solid must be in the middle. Scientists could tell it was small and very dense and therefore must be metal.

If you ask me, there just guessing... the teachers I had all said the same thing about this when the pressure was on to answer this: "It's a solid liquid."
Wait a minute, the only solid liquids I know of is ice... so the lava is hot, (liquid), but the core is some how ice? Give me a break, let them guess all they want, I would rather go with more reliable sources.

I know this one... im in tag science and i already learned this one are u in 6th grade? oh well ..... ok... yes it has something to do with p and s waves.. they could tell because p waves bend if they reach the liquid core but a s wave they stop when they reach the liquid core... there is this thing called shadow zone where they dont touch.. i hope that makes sense

I think one of the waves might not travel through liquid, maybe p? I think s are the short waves and p are long. And also it's considered theory, not fact.
