There is currently a fiberglass tub in the bathroom and we are thinking about tearing it out and doing a walk in shower that is tiled up the wall? Any idea on how to figure out the estimate? We need to decide rather quickly as we are having trouble replacing the current shower head...thanks.

Is this your only bath?
Bath's they are tabboo for remodel if there is only 1.
When you start demo, there will always be a suprise!!!
To fix, more time, you get pressured, mistakes get made, good luck.
I quit bidding on bath remodels for that same reason.

Are you doing the work yourself? That is a big variable. Tilework is expensive if contracted out. As a man with much construction/contracting experience, unseen and considering the standard dimensions of the bathtub to be replaced with a double walk in tiled shower, using two colors of tile to form an ornate pattern (but no special diamond or octagonal cutting), I would do the job entirely turn-key, plumbing, green board, finshed tile and fixtures, including tear out, cleanup and disposal of old material, for $5500.00.

Your area of the country will make a big difference. And you could save quite a big chunk if you do the grunt work yourself. I encourage you to hire a professional for the plumbing work at the very least. I just read that the average bathroom make-over is around $10,000.
Another thing to consider: If this is your only bathroom replace the bathtub. When you sell your home a you need at least one bathtub or it will be hard to sell.
