i have been voluteering at a non-profit orgnization as a accountant assistant for a while. a month ago, they have a part-time opening position for accounting assistant, and i applied for that job right away. since then, every time i went to volunteer there i would ask them about job interview, but they always said next week. and just about yesterday, they told me they hired someone else, and also said they welcome volunteers so i can still stay there. i just said ok, but i felt hurt inside. i believe i have been doing good job for them, but i didn't even get a job interview.
do you think they just take advantage of me since they just want me work as a free employee, or something else going on? also, i thought they hired a professional but l just found out they hired a stundet (i am a student also) with no expericens at all.

Consider this a great opportunity to get some real feedback on how to make yourself more attractive to employers. Go to the person responsible for hiring (and the person setting up interviews, and your boss., etc), and tell them that
1. "I was surprised that I was not able to get an interview for this job"
2. "I would appreciate any feedback or coaching you can give me on improving either my skills or my professional presense so that I can be considered for similar jobs in the future."

When you go to have this conversation,
DO NOT sound like you are accusing them of anything
DO NOT get defensive about anything you hear - this will not be the time to show them they are wrong - this is the time to listen and learn.

DO use phrases like: help me understand, give me some coaching, I'd love some feedback, etc.
DO listen carefully, and ask questions like, "So what you mean is...", and restate what you think they told you to make sure you understood them correctly.
DO realize that this person is doing you a big favor by being honest
DO realize that they are telling you about their IMPRESSION of you. It may not be an accurate reflection of who you are, but it IS an accurate reflection of how you are coming accross to the people you work with.

You have been treated in a manner which was unfair. I suggest you stop volunteering there immediately. If you are not respected enough to even be considered for the interview, granted an interview then shouldn't work there for free. Yes, they are taking advantage of you and have insulted you by hiring a student (your equal).

Do not continue to volunteer here, in all areas we teach people how to treat us and if we say, treat us like a doormat they do and that goes for this work related situation as well as personal situations.

You have to honestly consider the fact your work may not be impressing them. If they were impressed with you they would have interviewed you. Not trying to hurt your feelings, just trying to be honest. So go to the hiring manager for that position and ask them what you need to be doing better so you can be considered the next time there is an opening. Use this as a learning experience so you can better your skills.

Could be your weak spelling, grammar and word processing skills.
Sorry, but it was time for a brutally honest evaluation of your presentation.
Communication skills in or outside of the work environment are very important when one is applying for, or is employed in, any professional capacity.
This is a good example as to why we (here on Answers) sometimes seem to be preaching to young students that want to drop out when we tell them to "stay in school and pay attention" so they can have a secure future.

I would talk to the president of the orgnization.Ask then for answers, write your questions down before you go in so you don't get up set and forget anything. If they just want you for a volunteer, I would leave. Find something that pays even if it is minimum. Sound fishy to me.

To pay for something which is already available free is not business like, so what that NGO is doing is right. Why do you have to feel hurted? why don't you go somewhere else and use your this NGO experience as a tool to get another job.
Stop loosing your confidence and getting emotionally attached to organisations. They use you like a toilet paper.
I know it kid cause i use them too.
Make one single aim in your life: MAKING MONEY.

I say don't waste time trying to get them to hire you. They don't make money honey.. "non-profit organisation". They just count on incoming donation.

Move-on. I say, get your resume and documents in order. Get someone to help you with your Job Application Letter and submit to as many company possible.
Sooner or later, there bound to be a company who will hire you.

Important thing to remember: Don't waste time and Don't give up.

Best wishes

Something else is going on if you couldn't get an interview.
I suspect that they already knew the person they hired long
before and had already made up their minds to hire her.
Check it out.

why the hell are you working for free? Are you crazy? If this isn't an internship you need to go work for people who will pay you.
