Of The Seven Ancient Wonders of The World, I would choose The Lighthouse at Alexandria for a number of reasons:

Of all The Wonders, it served the most practical purpose: Guiding ships at sea by day (a giant mirror reflecting the sun) and by night (huge bonfire).

Certainly there is a practical aspect in beauty as well as graves for the dead. However, The Lighthouse seems to have served the greatest good to the many.

Second, it was dedicated as a monument to "the savior gods (on behalf of all who sail the seas)". It spoke to the hearts of the many who sensed a need for salvation, even if salvation simply meant salvation from drowning in a shipwreck..

Third, the very plans for the monument/lighthouse were drawn up in The Library at Alexandria, one of "my" personal picks for a top wonder of the ancient world.

In effect, a Wonder of The Ancient World had it's genesis within the walls of another Wonder.

Finally, except for the Pyramids which still stand, The Lighthouse survived the longest.

It might still be in some form of ruins had not the Egyptian Mamelouk Sultan, Qaitbay used the stones and marble from The Lighthouse ruins to fortify his fortress (in 1480 AD/CE).

Iwould like to believe that the Taj Mahal takes the 'Taj'.I am not saying this out of patriotism[being an Indian].I have been there and seen it all.
It has a history ,a story and clever architecture going back to an age where it was not even comprehensible to get this kind of work done.

I feel that the Grand Canyon is the best of the wonders of the world because it can't be duplicated. The Eiffel Tower, Statue of Liberty, Pyramids at Giza, etc. are all manmade and can be duplicated (see Las Vegas), but it is nearly impossible to replicate the scope and beauty of the canyon.
