I use to have that problem too and I'd always lose. My friend finally bought me an electric and I threw that uncooperative one away . So far no problems.

If the blade gets all gunked up it will have a harder time cutting. Washing it may not sufficiently clean the blade. You may have to get something, like a butter knife, and scrape off anything on the blade.
