GALILEO - The first poor b*****d who dared to question the established 'church' doctrine. He said the earth was not flat and defined gravity relative to the so-called 'pound of feathers' falling from a certain height as opposed to a 'pound' of something much heavier falling faster due to the aspect of friction. His thesis on the earth being round, per se, was based on the fact that celestial bodies in the night sky moved in relation to their position in the sky at different times of the night. This gave his genius mind the ability to decipher that the earth was rotating(turning), because, in his opinion, these 'celestial bodies' were very far away and could not move as such due to the distance involved(as he surmised), so he surmised correctly that the earth was 'turning'. He was stopped from 'doing' his experimental observations by the 'all powerful' church, and actually came under the 'inquisition' of his time and found guilty of 'heresy' for questioning the church's belief(a simple one) that the 'earth' was the centre of the universe, not the sun as he declared. He was found guilty of this 'heresy' and placed under 'house arrest' for the rest of his life. He went blind and was allowed to return to his home, where he died. In this day and age, the vatican, through the Pope, has forgiven him, hundreds of years later because his logic and genius were correct. Go figure!!!
