Pap Smears should not hurt but they can be a little uncomfortable. They use an instrument called a speculum which looks like duck bill. They insert it into the vagina and then are able to open it up to get a view of the cervix. They then take some cells of the cervix (they use a little plastic brush for this and yes it is painless). You only have to have a pap smear every 2 years and it can save your life.

It hurts a little, I hate to say. But it is very brief.
They will insert an instrument(a speculum) which will help them open up your canal (they apply lots of KY jelly so its easy to insert). Then they take a long cotton swab (like a Q-tip) and swab around your cervix. That part pinches a little and believe me, all women are tense while having this done. Then they will take the speculum out and insert a two fingers and feel inside to make sure everything feels normal. You will probably have a breast exam too.
It is definitely not the most comfortable thing in the world but it is good to have one regularly. Good luck, and don't be too nervous...it is over so fast.

They dont really hurt they are just a little uncomfortable. First they will put a speculum in to open your vagaina so they can check and make sure everything is all right. Then they will take a swab of your vaginal wall to test, that feels a little weird but is not painful. Then you are done. All in all it only takes about 15 min or so and is worth it to get the birth control.

No paps do not hurt . The doctor is just looking to make sure everythin is ok and they take a cotton swab and run it accross your uterus and cervix to get cells to check for cancer or STDs or infections . There is nothing painful about it . It is at the very worst simply a little embarrassing .

No, it doesn't really hurt. You might feel a slight pinch but that's it. You will lay back in the stirrups and the doctor will take a tiny scrape of some cells and that's it. At 15, unless you are sexually active I am not sure that you need a pap though.

congratulations for going that extra step in your health care to check for cancer of the cervix....you can never be too young
if you have never had a pelvic exam...the ob/gyn lays you flat with your feet in 'stirrups' and has you spread you legs apart...he/she then places a finger just inside you vagina and presses down to help relax the vagianl musculature...
he/she then inserts a warmed and greased speculum (size changes with virginity) into your vagina and then opens it up...this way, he/she can see inside of your vagina to the cervix (opening to the uterus)
he/she then takes a circular toothbrush like device, inserts a portion of it into the cervical os (the opening where sperm go in to find a waiting egg) or the exit place where menstrual flows come out if you did not get pregnant...(also the same opening that a baby passes through when you are about to deliver)
as a general rule, it is only a slight discomfort if done right...an you may have a small amount of bloody discharge...(a spot or two)
and you are done...
before you go, do not have sex for 72-96 hours (semen messes up this test) and do not douche because that can change the tissue texture and mess up the test as well (and who wants it done 2 times ina week?)
good luck
(how about breast exams...do you do that as well? are youalso practicing safe sex and have your partner wear a condom?
STD's can also be gotten by oral sex as well...

i wouldnt say they hurt but they are very uncomfortable the best thing to do is try to relax (i know this is hard) try to focus on something else in the room some offices have posters on the ceilings for this purpose..they use this specula thing (with a lubricant) and insert it then use a long q-tip to swab the inside they will will look around and take out the spectrum then insert like 2 fingers and feel around for bumps and stuff and they will push on your stomach a little to see if its sore anywhere...it doesnt last to long and is uncomfortable and yes embarrasing more than it is painful, just remember its for the best

honestly, the first couple times it does hurt just a little bit for a second....they use a metal thing to open you up, and then they stick something with a little brush on it and just scrape a little bit, it feels more like a pinch kind of...nothing to be scared of really, just awkward first. but its over and done with in a few minutes and you're out the door and don't have to worry about it for another year!

I agree with Thrill88.. At 15 why do you need Pap Smear ?
According to American Cancer Society 2004: 3 years after vaginal intercourse, no later than age 21.

They have never "hurt" me. its just uncomfortable and a bit embarrassing. I do end up bleeding a bit from them but its nothing to worry about. Get used to them cause you have a lifetime ahead of them.
