dvd's use the AC3 encoding for audio. i wouldn't say the quality is anything astounding...it's just a compression method. Primarily it's used for the 7.1channel support not available in other compression formats.

regular audio albums aren't encoded using 7.1 to begin with so there's no real love loss getting them in mp3 or wma. as long as it's encoded with a decent bit rate then it's fine

The settings you used for the MPEG-4 setting are perfect. 192kbps is going to be pretty much indistinguishable from the original audio bit rate. What AC3 is more famously known as though to the general public is called Dolby Digital. As long as you keep the frame rate the same as the source, and the resolution, (720x480) and use the higher video bit rate settings, you are good to go. MPEG-2 is the right encoding format for the DVD, since this is the format that is commonly used for store bought DVDs, But it is the wrong container to be used for DVD playback on a DVD player. I think it is a type of *avi file, or *vob file that is used for playback, on a standard DVD player. (Basically MPEG-2/avi or MPEG-2/vob.) It can't be MPEG-2 used by itself. However it won't matter if you rip your Store bought DVD into the proper format, because if you go to burn your DVD-R/+R/RW, Windows as well as most programs are going to only burn your disk as a DVD data disk. You need to burn it as a DVD video disk. If you have Windows 7 Home Edition, then it comes with a built in program that will burn it as a DVD video disk. It will even give you menus, and scene selection screens like a store bought DVD movie. It's called Windows DVD Maker. If you don't have Windows 7, then Nero I hear has that ability to burn DVD video discs to. There are also other programs that are good for DVD burning in this format as well. Other ideas, and suggestions for DVD video burning, will be recommended to you as well by other people. NOTE: All other Windows operating systems, for the exception of Windows 7, do not have a free built in DVD video Maker program.
