Well they do, but they dont
They help you relax because they are always there for you when you feel down or angry and you see them there looking at you with those inocent eyes, you pet them and feel as if you are understood. Or you wish that you were them.
They dont because, sometimes pets arent as perfect as we want them to be. We have to take them out for walks when we really dont feel like going out for a walk, we have to clean up after them and we have to take them to the vet and feed them, etc... so its a two way kinda thing but to me its all worth it. Me having a pet did help me with my stress.

Yes. when they are good (98% of the time.) They usually give you unconditional love, don't talk back all the time, and will sit and listen to your problems or cuddle when you need it.
Then there's the 2% of the time where they cause the stress~ the dog takes off for a jog around the neighborhood, has a run in with the skunk 2 blocks down, comes home jumps all over you... and you are now already late for work... now you stink and are late and don't know where to start.

I do believe they help relieve stress. Ha, my little kitten right now is sitting next to me, kneeding me. She is very calming, and helps me forget about the stressful situations I had during the day. I also think pets help with depression. I get depressed often, and sometimes my cats are the only thing that can make me smile. I will forever have animals in my life.

Yes, most of the time. When I'm really stressed my cats will come lay on my lap and be so loving. But, sometimes when I'm really stressed they'll play and try to tear up the paper I'm reading or something and only irritate me more. They aren't trying to though. I have to remember that.

Most of the time I'd be a lot more stressed if I didn't have them in my life.

Yes I do and personally from my own experience. They love the soft rubbing on the back of their necks, at lease my pets enjoy this. I also found this is relaxing to myself as well.
Dogs are now used in Nursing Homes for the elderly in some States and it is a sight to see.

YES, but only if you are able to train them and care for them properly.
P.S I take my pooches to a local nursing home each saturday and the old people are so happy that they dont have room to be distressed.
