They were a good band in their day, but by today's standards they are sort of mindless and cheesy. There is no real emotion or angst or purpose behind their music, it was mostly weepy love songs. Kilroy was a great concept album though, in their own way they were sort of groundbreaking... there weren't too many commercially successful concept albums in those days. Domo arigato, Mr. Roboto!!

They were like many bands who are good but then had a hit single and suddenly they begin to make music to appeal to masses. In Styx's case, it was Babe and their music went soft after that(except for a few exceptions like Blue Collar man and renegade ). Check out Styx at their prime with their Crystal Ball album.

I guess a lot of people consider them to be chick rock. I'm not much of a fan myself but I LOVE "Renegade" oh so very much.
