theres alot of them...
bob dylan had brought the art of lyrics into the foreground in the 60s and continues to be a giant today releasing an acclaimmed album as recently as 2006.
Carlos Santana is a guitar genious and has also had enormous sucess currently especially when he teamed up a few years ago with current musicians like rob thomas, michelle branch and wyclef jean.
I'm going to include Paul McCartney although I'm not sure he's an American (I don't know that he ever asked for or got American citizenship)but as a member of the Beatles, founded one of the greatest Rock & Roll bands in history. That can't be debated by anyone. He has written lyrics and music for almost 50 years both with partners like John Lennon, Michael Jackson, Elvis Costello and by himself. He was nominated for several grammys in 2006 for his latest album Chaos and Creation in the backyard.
One thing these influential great musicians have in common is that they are all still making their music today and it is still relevant. These are the names that most of todays artist credit to have inspired them.
