help with super smash bros. melee?

I am entering a contest for smash bros. melee and i'll need all the help i can get. I know im using mario for the contest. problem is, im not even a teen yet and the youngest person playing is 14! I need stratigies for mario. I came in dead last last time and i'm all worked up cause the winner last time is entering too!!!!! Help!!!!1

I make first place in every 14 out of 15 free-for-all match ups. I've gone to tournaments and placed in the winners bracket every time.

The best advice I can give you is the very advice that I have followed to go pro.

Study everything you can about your character at this website:

Also, go to http://www.youtube.com and watch as many videos of pro Mario matches as you can, you will learn a lot.

Lastly, the most important techniques you could ever learn are wavedashing (all varieties) and SHFFL'ing (short hop, fast fall, l-cancel). LOOK THEM UP! Don't think you can beat a true pro without the techs.

chances are, that you will be playing in a tournament melee. which means that you can use the yellow cstick for uncharged smash attacks. try different long range attacks to start with, such as your fire ball or throwing items. (note: be careful though if you are fighting fox, falco, or another mario as they can reflect your projectiles) don't be afraid to use your L/R and rolling away, then counterattacking. finally, move in and use a uncharged smash attack. it takes little time and is almost as effective as a charged smash. any more questions, dont hesitate to drop an email, just be sure to put in the subject liine what game you need help with or i'll accidentally delete it as spam.

hit around your opponent for a while and figure out if they have a pattern or like to use certain moves often. once you know and have gotten their % ratting around 75 smash them with his power move from the edge of the stage.

Here's a tip: switch to Link. He's bigger, better, and has the greatest moves! However if your heart is absolutely set on Mario, check out youtube for videos to help you manuever him or visit ign.com for guides.

well, my favorite character is Kirby, fall off a cliff and suck them up then shoot them out.
otherwise, use marth or Roy, they are awesome when attacking in combos.
