Whoever you are, Berserk and Death Note should appeal to you. You should try the managa for both. Love hina is another...my favorite anime ever...like EVER. Bleach/Naruto is a must...they r very famous..and for good reasons.

the best anime/manga so far right now has to be Death Note. The anime hasnt been released in the US yet. But Viz has claimed dubbing licensing for it already so it will be soon enough. But the manga version already has 9 official volumes of it out currently. So its best to start on that if you like. Now, on TV currently that is good enough to watch would have to be Naruto. I would suggest one piece since its the best on going anime ive seen so far. But i only mean the original version. The tainted dub version is just too terrible to watch.

other mangas that are good which i am reading recently would be

Busou Renkin
Claymore
Welcome to the NHK
Genshiken
Full Metal Alchemist (just started reading on it. pretty much a notch better up than the anime)
Sgt. Frog
Hunter X Hunter

On TV right now... everyone has basically covered it! Bleach and Naruto are awesome. I also like Prince of Tennis, though I haven't seen it come on very often. Sometimes the international channel has Studio Ghibli films on. (Miyazaki). Almost every Ghibli film is excellent.

Manga - if you like girly stuff: Fruits Basket is huge and very cute without being flaky. Rurouni Kenshin is a samuri/romance that appeals to guys and gals and is also v. good. Full Metal Alchemist is one of the best I've read (a great show too, if you come across it.) Some very girly ones if you like InuYasha: Fushi Yuugi, and MuriPuri. I'm into a lot of the guy/sports/fights/comedies manga, but that's a whole 'nother can of worms!

For the best series I have ever seen, it's Cowboy Bebop. The characters are very well conceived, the entire series is cleverly arranged (set after music, hence the name), and you don't know how much you sink into the reality of the show until you see the final scene. I was amazed at how much I cared about the characters. Full Metal Alchemist is another very well-conceived series which gives you a feeling that the world the characters inhabit is a very real one. For movies, rent out "Akira", "Spirited Away", or the original "Ghost in the Shell".

1. Bleach = shinigami's are way too cool, add some arrancars and vizards then... KABOOM! an explosive anime...
2. Naruto = shinobi's and their chakra's... superb... naruto's quest for Hokage is really fascinating
3. Deathnote = it's got the makings of a great anime... the plot is artistically created that it makes the viewer's mouths agape... Light and L's deductive skills are unmatched... supreme GENIUSES!
4. Full Metal Alchemist = the quest for the restoration of both the brother's bodies is really intriguing... and... who doesn't love the homunculus???
5. shakugan no shana = ever heard of the main character getting killed on the very first episode? well, here's one... plus, you've got to enjoy watching shana devour those melon bread...O_o
6. melancholy of haruhi suzumiya = you don't believe in aliens, ESPers and time travellers?... think again

yeah... they're the best....^^

Angel Sanctuary even though it is a little controversial because of the relationship between brother and sister, but it is a good manga/anime
Another one I enjoy is Bleach, really cool anime, havent read the manga though.
The one I've watched that they show on TV is Naruto and Samurai Shamploo(?) and some other ones.. but Naruto is my favorite.
