I'm a social worker in the U.S. Although many people think of traditional social work when considering how to help the poor and suffering, I wouldn't really recommend it. The main reason why is because at present, the agencies you would work in have no resources (money, food, and other resources) to offer the clients, and not even enough resources (wages, computers, desks, pens and pencils) to support the workers. Many social workers become very bitter and cynical because of this situation, and it is my opinion that the profession is in a near crisis state.

Most people in social work eventually burn out and go into private practice, which is referred to by some as "helping worried white people in the suburbs." Once you go in to private practice, you're no longer helping truly needy people.

If true compassion to the suffering is your aim, I recommend you start by volunteering in various agencies providing basic services to the needy, such as soup kitchens, food banks, and homeless shelters, or maybe a medical clinic. Find out what agencies are advocating for the truly needy, and volunteer with them.

Look into philanthropic organizations in your area. Look at the websites for various national and international relief organizations, such as the World Health Organization and other international organizations, such as Relief Web http://www.reliefweb.int/

Because many of these organizations are busier providing services than in marketing themselves, you will have to search them out. If you can, contact some of them and ask them what kinds of workers are needed and desired, and what you have to do to qualify.

If you are spiritually minded, you might consider religious service. Best wishes with this.
