China, while split into spheres of influence, was never conquered. This all started after the end of the First Opium War(1839-1842). Recognizing the weakness of China, both militarily and economically, Europe was able to bully her around. Only bickering over who got what saved China form dissolvement.
At the time of British conquest of India, It was a number of smaller countries. Some chose to join with Britain while others chose to resist, ending up getting conquered.
Japan started on the same road as China, but it recognized quickly that it's survival as an Independent nation depended on learning the ways of the West. It comes down to that while change in Japan met with limited resistance, change in China was met with such resistance that it made the country largely impotent.

Actually, no (sean e).
China and India were both militarily conquered by the Western world. After losing war in each of their own respective countries, the European winners would essentially take over the economy.
This was different in Japan. The US military (Commodore Mathew Perry to be exact) threatened the use of military action. After seeing what had happened to China, Japan knew it could not win a war. Therefore, it decided to open its ports to the Western world. While this was going on, however, Japan quickly learned and adapted to the European way, and essentially became just like them.

India gradually fell under the British Rule because at that time, India is fragmented into principalities and states without any one strong native power to oppose British incursion. The mighty Mughal Empire that once ruled over the Indus Valley and Central India at the time of British incursion is already fragmented and dying.
China fell victim to Western Imperialism through the unequal treaties and the Western Powers curved out "spheres of influences" in Chinese-held territories because China although united under one political power at that time, was not able to resist Western Power's incursion. Chinese imperial government was never quick to adopt to Western military technology and the West's predatory diplomacy, The effort at reforms of the late 19th century Chinese emperor who would have save China was twarted by conservatives lead by the Empress Dowager.
The West is so predatory that Queen Victoria bans the use of opium (our illegal drugs in the modern world) in her own country but goes to war in China to force the sales of opium to the Chinese!
Japan was quick to adopt the imperialistic policy from the Western nations because the ruling class were united in their determination to transform Japan's politico-economic systems along the examples of Western nations' experience. Having modernised their industry and military, they were now ready to fulfill their destiny to become the masters of Asia, that is, become imperialistic, because of the belief in the divine origin of their emperors.
