It is a free online gaming service. You can play WiFi enabled games like Mario Kart DS and others against gamers around the world through the Internet.
Look for the blue "Wi-Fi" symbol on game packages.
All you need at home is a Wireless LAN router or the Nintendo WiFi USB Stick for your PC. Or go to a public hotspot. The location of these free hotspots can be found on the adress below.
If you have a WLAN router or USB Stick, or arrived at a hotspot, start the DS with the WiFi game and go into the options menu of the game to set up your connection. It's pretty straightforward.
Depending on the game you can then race against others in Mario Kart, stack in several multiplayer games of Tetris or battle monsters in several WiFi Roleplaying games.
However, on some games you need Friend Codes. These are unique 16 digit numbers that you can trade with your friends. This way you can choose to play with your friends only

Ok, first let me teach you what wifi is. Wi-Fi, or wireless fidelity is basically high-speed broadband internet sent into a device that converts it into radio waves called a router. The Nintendo DS has the capabilities to use wifi built into it already. All you need is a wifi-enabled game (like mariokart, animal crossing, metroid prime: hunters, and any other game that has the symbol on the front). Once you have a wifi game you need an access point, a router. If you don't already use wifi at home and have a router try your local library, mcdonald's, starbucks, etc. Basically what wifi does is let you play real people, wirelessly, across the world. Everything you need is in the system, you don't have to buy a thing (except a game :P). Hope I helped.

Wi-Fi Connection is an online service run by Nintendo to facilitate free Internet play in compatible Nintendo DS and Wii games. Both systems can connect to the service through a Wi-Fi connection, and the Wii also has the ability to connect to the service through Ethernet.
Games designed to take advantage of Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection offer Internet play seamlessly integrated into the game. After selecting Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection in the game's menu, the device connects to the service. Simplicity and speed of starting a game appear to be Nintendo's focus. For example, in Mario Kart DS, players choose the online multiplayer option, then the player chooses to play with friends, play with people in his/her region, or play with people around the world. Then the game immediately starts searching for available players. The user can also have a different game name for each game he or she plays online.

i am pretty sure it is already connected to the ds. it lets you play games with other people even if you don't have it (the only one i know is mario kart ds but i like 1 player games so i really don't know) and you can talk to other people with pictochat. it's wireless. you don't need all the cables and stuff like you do with the gameboy advance.
