I've looked a lot for the right turtle or tortoise that could fit my lifestyle, but couldn't find anything. Any ideas? Thanks. :)

Russian Tortoises are very good for beginners in my opinion. They are friendly, shy, don't tend to bite, and they stay small compared to some. I think they get up to around 7-9 inches and eat veggies. You would have to look into different reptile rescues and see if they have any. Most won't ship so local is best. I have seen them in several pet stores and even on-line at different sites but you can expect to pay at least $65 for one if you buy. Most adoption places ask for a fee as well so that's up to you. The price is also better than most other tortoises. Hope this helps. Also, www.LLLreptile.com is a good site to buy from.

Whatever species of turtle or tortoise you choose to adopt, please do A LOT of research before you take it home so that you know how to properly care for it! Most diseases that turtles and tortoises suffer from are due simply to the fact that husbandry conditions are sub-par (meaning that the environment and food choices are incorrect). There are plenty of books, herp specialists, and web sites that can help you with this.

In addition, make sure you look up the laws in your state regarding which species are legal to own. The laws are different in every state, and you may even be required to purchase a permit to keep the turtle. You certainly don't want to get into legal trouble over your pet!

And remember - any turtle or tortoise you adopt WILL get larger, it is just a matter of how large. :) So make sure you know what you will be in for in a few years after it grows.

Good luck!
