Not quite, but close.
If you catch a squirrel by its tail, it can "shed" the fur and outer skin of the tail so it can slip the tail out and escape.
Very traumatic to a young child the first time they see that.

Honey...I have killed and skinned HUNDREDS of squirrels for the table,and I can tell you for 100% certain there is NO WAY a squirrels tail will come off by itself.Now there are some lizards called 'skinks' that drop their tail if you catch them,but NOT squirrels.

there is only one rodent I know of that can drop it's tail and it's not a squirrel. It's called a Degu, We had someone breeding them at my school and a newer student scared the crap out of the thing and it's tail fell off, so we saved it. The Degu is pretty much a big gerbil that lives in the desert.

Your friend has a squirrel confused with a lizard. A lizard can lose its tail to avoid capture; a squirrel cannot.

it`s not the squirrel that does such think it`s a lizard.they do that in order to distract their predators from keeping on chasing them.
