The same of amount of the Sun's radiation energy which is falling on a larger area near the poles, is falling on a small area near the equator. This means that the radiation energy received from the Sun over unit area near the poles is less than that which is received near the Equator. The Sun is overhead only between the latitudes twenty three and half degrees North and twenty three and half degrees south ,as the apparent movement of the Sun in the northsouth direction is limited to the area between these two latitudes. So these areas get more radiation from the sun and the places beyond this area towards the poles get less radiation and hence are colder.

Because the sun's rays don't hit the Earth as directly as near the equator. The farther away you move from the equator, the closer to the horizon it will appear. At the equator, around noon, people don't have shadows as the sun shines from directly above.

In summer, the earth is tilted more towards the sun that one hemisphere will warm while the other will cool down into winter. Winter in the northern hemisphere means summer in the southern, and vice versa.

Places closer to the equator get almost vertical sunlight, ie the sun is almost overhead and hence more of it falls on a particular area.

But if you move away from the equator, the suns rays begin to slant. The energy is lost in travelling thru the atmosphere and also as the rays spread over a larger area and hence not as intense.
