Hand carved wood-work. There are many grat and cheap wood carvings you can get all over Jakarta and Indonesia (masks, statues, puppets...). I went to Indonesia for business all the time, but when my trips stopped - I regretted not loading up on the wood carvings. Go to the big department store in Jakarta (attached to the Hard Rock Cafe) - that has a whole floor (3rd or 4th floor?) of reasonably priced handicrafts. Bali and outside Jakarta has cheaper stuff too. On one of my last trips I bought a lot of this stuff - and am very happy about that! I also bought a stone carving from Bali - but it was damaged in shipping - now useless. Hand-carried stuff is best.

AS far as food goes there is really nothing that you can't buy at any Asian grocery store. I'd recommend batik handicrafts, woodwork, jewelry or wayang puppets. Pretty much any major department store will have a floor of Indonesian handicrafts, if you will be in Jakarta you should go to Plaza Senayan or Plaza Indonesia.

The amazing countryside and diversity of wildlife as well as the beautiful and friendly people all come way up the list from *YYYAAAAWWWWWNNNNN* Shopping!! You can go shoppping in London, New York, Anywhere. Let go!! Do something different! If you must though, the pasar hitam (black market) in Jakarta has many cheap electrical goods, as does pasar klodok (toad market) try Blok M and Pasar Raya for large, western style malls in Jakarta, both have a huge variety of goods. There's also a Carrefour which is good.

both food n souvenirs..
Indonesian food is the best I think.. you can try as much food as you want while in Indonesia.. but I don't think you can take it home to your country since the airport rules are very strict now..
souvenirs are lots.. depend on what u like.. sarung, keris, batik, all other traditional clothes.

I prefer both fruits and fruit and vegetables better, however they look and taste. You desire a little of both.

In the event it's a fruit it includes seeds, otherwise it's a vegetable. And vegetables are usually grown in the ground while fruits are grown in trees.

you didnt mention where in Indonesia the food and souvenir comes from.
every island/region has its unique food and souvenir.
Sumatra: you must eat durian (fruit), makanan padang (its similar like indian curry....spicy)
Java: rawon, gado gado (Jakarta). Buy silvers and batik (garment). art and craft also nice
Bali: roast pork. souvenirs: paintings, anything artistic
Irian: pork. souvenirs: orchid!!!!

Well, just concentrating on the island of Java, I would recommend:
batik, silver items, keris (swords), teak furniture, lava stone sculptures, paintings and ...coffee.
