Stick shift - you can't beat it in snow. Automatics always start in first gear, no matter what the indicator says, so it's often too much torque for snow. With a stick, I can start in second, effectively halving the torque. Also, in snow, I can downshift SMOOTHLY to slow down, without risking locking up the wheels. Much better on gas, and much more fun. As a bonus, if you ever leave you lights on while parked, you can start with a flat battery by rolling it down a hill and letting out the clutch. Try doing THAT with an automatic!

automatic is much easier, but a manual is alot more fun to drive, and a bit better gas miliage.
Although the automatic, jumps 2-3 gears when needing to pass a semi on the freeway, they still haven'tfixed all the problems. The transmission that you teach, and learns the driver. Still doesn't work. It will have mess ups here and there.
Manuals, better MPG and trans am or little sports car MUST be a manual, sounds horrible with exhaust also.
Automatic Pro's
You don't have to allways press two pedals down. Trust me doing alot of driving as I do, even though it's a muscle car, sounds nicer with stick, still beats you up. My leg sometimes get's sore, not my right, but my left, allways holding down the pedal,
You can't get automatic start with manuals.
You can't let off the clutch until it's off or in neutral out of habbit, you tend to forget that it's not in "park"
Your e-brake gives you problems on a hill, you have to constantly play with the cluth and gas.
Although with an automatic "as my truck '02 mountaineer, have a '01 mustang gt, and that"
My truck let off the brake on a hill, it will litterally have a temp. e-brake, until you press the gas. It plays with it,
can let off the brake while in drive won't go anywhere.
manuals, not good on dates.
automatics, not good for city driving, with exhaust.
If your wanting a civic, or a quiet car.
You need to choose, but a trans am, must be stick. Diesels are NOT cool stick! IDK Where the hell that has anything involved with semi's. But hey.

If you are planning to keep the car for 10 years or more, you might want to try a fully automatic transmission. If you still have an occasional sporting mood, you might want to try a "STEPTRONIC" type of transmission which has no clutch pedal, but can still allow you to drive a manually shifted (+ or -) pre-selected gear choice. If you are still in your teens, go for the standard manual five or six speed transmissions. For senior citizens, why don't you try the new 7 speed automatic?

fuel economy is better with stick shift. It is better to learn on an automatic. You can concentrate on developing safe driving skills without being up set with stalling etc, Its easy to get upset and say i cant do this. If you are pass you r test and have trouble with the stick . Stay with the automatic...Few people are killed by someone jamming gears or stalling. Dont let it get you down.

stick shift. in the long run I would rather replace a clutch over a transmission for an automatic anyday if mechanical problems occur later down the line.

depends on the person and the use of the vehicle a stick may be a pain in the rear for inner city driving shifting down for every light but are better for long distance driving so it is really personal preference

Depends on the car. My truck is Standard and I wouldn't want it anyway else. With a standard, you have much more control of the vehicle, and you are one with the vehicle. With automatics they are moreso for luxury cars and for people who can't drive standard. I will not buy an automatic if i can help it. But for every rule there are exceptions.

It really depends on your personal needs and taste. But...how about a manumatic system (steptronic/tiptronic/etc.), which allow you for swift, clutchless manual shifting on demand, but can also be driven as automatics? You would get the best of both worlds.
