well at first i thought the problem was from driving the car cold, but now its been happening after driving the car for an hour or so, but what happens is my RPM's stay stuck over 1,000 after coming to a complete stop. i can hear the engine working and trying to lurch forward even though im at a complete stop. also i noticed if i put the car into park while it is in this state, the RPM's fly all the way up to 3,000. any ideas as to what could be the problem?

There are a great deal of problems that could cause this, more than I would want to list or guess at. It is not normal, you should have a mechanic look at the car to diagnose the problem and get it fixed. In some cases the problem you are having could be dangerous to you or someone else, say , if you couldn't stop on a slippery road. Best to get it fixed.

Here may be an easy thing... make sure the throttle cable aint sticking... Or a possible air leak somewheres...
My guess is the throttle cable may be getting stuck on you or the throttle body is stickling causing the concern.
When you hit the gas pedal for the first time, is it smooth or does it feel like you are pressing against say a brick that suddenly moves?
If latter, bring to shop to inspect the cables and throttle body

I can see 2 possibilities. First, the throttle position sensor may be bad. Second, the temperature sensor may be bad - if it thinks the engine is still cold, it will keep giving it more gas. Either of these may be it, although a bad throttle position sensor is your most likely bet.

i own a repair shop, and you may have a bad throttle position sensor on it,causing this to happen,do this take it by any auto zone and have them scan it,they can tell you if it does have a bad sensor and they also have a good deal on the parts you might need to repair it with, and they check it for free, that's the good part of it,this way you don't buy a bunch of parts you don't need for it,good luck,i hope this help,s.

Its your throttle positioning sensor. It controls your engines idle speed.
