I amd a 15 year old male. I have known that making movies is something i wanted to do ever since i was 7 or 8 when i watched my first movie in a theatre which was Titanic. I have been acting practically my whole life as most kids do when they see someone cool do something and want to be them. Earlier on i had a video camera (no longer works) but i would practice with that. But then i quit when it stopped working and i got busy but now i have realized that acting is something i want to do as a career but i dunno how to really get started as far as putting myself out there, i recently auditioned for the school play though so hopefully i will be in that any practice will help. I also recently read for most movies you have to be a SAG member and to be a SAG member you have to be in a union movie or wtvr. Does anyone have any advise?? Any would be great

THNX!!

I recommend acting in student films, and--if you decide to go to college--taking theatre classes...

Researching your favorite actor, and getting down your own 'method' won't hurt.

Aside from that, you might want to look into publications like Backstage West or Variety, where they may have casting calls that fit your criteria.

Other than that...good luck!

Join an acting company in your local city for pay. Most actors start locally and then move to Hollywood.

Some advise classes, but other big name actors say skip the classes. For the major movies, SAG does indeed control who gets hired, just like a union, and that is sad. SAG caused George Lucas a lot of grief when he was making his Star Wars movies, but he did very well by hiring actors outside of SAG anyway.

SAG has major pull with big budget films produced by major studios, but not so much with independent films. It is something you will need to consider. SAG does not guarantee you a job. Only membership and some benefits if you do find a job.

Key is though to join a theater company like the ones that gave background to Bill and Brian Doyle Murray. John Cusack's parents have their own theater company and John grew up there with his former best friend Jeremy Piven. Felicity Huffman and her husband William H. Macy made their own company in New Jersey and took their careers to fame. Gary Sinise also started his own theater company out of St. Louis (I believe).

Check around and get your feet wet. Break a leg.

k in a nutshell, get into local community theater, get an acting coach, get head shots get an agent.
Noone will look at you with out those things, most of all the agent.

As far as SAG /AFTRA cards, it depends. You can do extra work with no lines or up to I think 6 words without a card. Anything more requires a card, but it is a catch 22, you can't do the six line part without a card, can't get a card untill that happens.

Usually what happens is someone is "grandfathered" which means the director wants you bad enough or knows you they will pay and get you a card. You just don't sign up and get one
