I saw a movie about Selena on TV and she sings and dance cumbia. I dance salsa and it seems they are the same. Do you agree with me?

Cumbia and Salsa are related. Cumbia is a dance from Colombia which has gain popularity in other Latin American countries especially Mexico where Selena became a popular singer-performer.

I consider Salsa as a hybrid of dances of Afro-hispanic origins. Cumbia is one of the dances that contributed to the evolution of salsa. This is the reason why some claims that Salsa came from Mexico or Colombia. Likewise, other Hispanic countries with similar dances also claim that Salsa started from them... Puerto Rico, Cuba and other Caribbean nations, and even as the Philippines.

So, I may say that you are right in a limited sense.
