Starting Unit:

C - Wilt Chamberlain - A great center must be dominant on both ends of the floor and Wilt was the most dominant of all time. Just look at his numbers. Russell might be the ideal center but he's rather small by today's standards and he excelled only on defense.
PF - Karl Malone - The word "power" in power forward was invented because of his play.
SF - Larry Bird - The best passing and shooting forward of all time.
SG - Michael Jordan - Greatest of all time.
PG - Magic Johnson - Revolutionized the position with his size and skill.

Off The Bench:

Kevin McHale - Best post player and sixth man of all time.
Bill Russell - Winningest player in the NBA ("11 rings, ten fingers").
Jerry West - Greatest pure shooter of all time.
Scottie Pippen - All-around player and defensive stopper.
Oscar Robertson - Greatest all-around player.
John Havlicek - Energy and spark.
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar - When everything else doesn't work - go to Kareem!

*Julius Erving - Deserves a slot if only for his contributions to the game. He could very well make it as one of the wingmen.

Starting 5: Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Bill Russell, Pete Maravich, Michael Jordan, Oscar Robertson

Bench: Wilt Chamberlain, Magic Johnson, Bob Lanier, John Havlicek, Dr. J, Hakeem Olajuwon, Larry Bird

Just Missing: Dave Bing, George Mikan, Moses Malone, Karl Malone, Isiah Thomas, Joe Dumars, Kobe Bryant, Shaq, John Stockton, Steve Nash, Charles Barkely, Jerry West, Patrick Ewing, Bob Cousey

The reason I don't mention many newer players is because they don't have a large body of work yet. Many of these players had set a number of records in their respective careers or were those guys that paved the way for today's players.

Point Guard - Bob Cousey
Shooting Guard - Michael Jordan
Small Forward - Larry Bird
Power Forward - Karl Malone
Center - Shaquille O'Neal

Bench - Bill Russell, Pete Maravich, Julius Erving, Wilt Chamberlain, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Magic Johnson, Jerry West.

Just miss the roster: Isiah Thomas

Any all star team would be incomplete without Maravich and Cousey. People tend to forget the 'old' guys besides Russell and Chamberlain.

Wow - did I just see dominique wilkins, Chris Paul, and Carlos Boozer on this list?

I mean, it's uncalled for to even have Lebron James anywhere near this list, much less the others...
