To end drunkenness and all it's associated problems. They felt that by outlawing alcohol, people would be more responsible.

The goal was to improve society by eliminating the sin of drinking or at least making it more difficult. For many getting some aid in taking care of the family was the real purpose. Many women sought a larger role in the way their lives were managed. It was a coalition of many interests realizing that they would not get any where politically, unless they united in a common cause, and pressed for more power to control their own lives.
