I have a BT Voyager wireless router which I use to connect me to the internet. But I am now wondering if I can use it to set up a LAN; I have my PC wired to the router and my laptop connecting wirelessly. I know that the Default Gateway is at 192.168.1.1, as is the DHCP and the DNS. I know that my pc has the I.P. address of 192.168.1.2 and my laptop 192.168.1.3. Only problem now is getting them to communicate - i tried pinging the pc from the laptop and vice-versa, but neither could find the other. I tried the net view command and nothing was found. Please assist me! Thanks

Just in case this is important, I have file + printer sharing disabled on both machines, but I may want to share the printer (connected by USB to the PC) if possible, and files. Does file sharing have to be on for the computers to see each other (I'd imagine it must be on for file sharing). Do I need to do anything else to play games over this LAN?

Yeah I know about that, that's just my private I.P. - didn't think anyone would be that stupid as to think they could do me any harm with that - chances are that theirs is exactly the same. Isn't it ironic that he thought he could call me a noob? ;-)

All you need to do is setup up a workgroup on both machines and turn on the file and printer sharing.

Cheat and click on that help and support thingy in your start menu, you will see on the left, "Networking and the Web" open that up.
On the next sctreen you'll see "Home and Small Office Networking" click on it and just follow the wizard. Your done and now have a little home network

Turn on the File and Printer Sharing on both machines to be able to transfer files back and forth. On the machine with the printer, right click on it and select properties, set it to shared.
On the laptop, click on your printers folder, select add a printer, network, then let it browse your network until it finds the printer. Your all finished.

P.S. Don't worry about telling people your IP. The IP you are using is only accessable internally on your machine. Guess the guy with the complaint is the noob.

Here's what you do, go to "My Computer" and right click, select properties. On the tab that opens select Computer Name. Scroll down and make sure workgroup is selected and give the computer a name. You can make it anything you want. Do the same thing with your laptop. Make it the same workgroup name as your computer. The two should them communicate with each other. If you want to share files, you will have to set that up as well. To do that, go to the file you want to share and right click, the go to sharing. Follow the steps. hope this helps you.

the subject is in all threat which you probably did no longer get all the drivers put in once you loaded the hot OS. bypass to the pc manufacturers information superhighway internet site and make certain you have downloaded all the drivers for all your hardware. you could discover which of them have a controversy with the help of going into the administration panel and looking out in the hardware supervisor. there will be warnings beside any which at the instant are not working properly. as quickly as you have the drivers loaded, and reboot, the lan port could artwork and you could set up you cyber web.

the LAN is what you use to connect to the internet always. so in each computer you'll use the internet wizard to set them and and select i want to set it up useing lan. this is all you'll need, it will also allow you to set up your email also.. the printer sharing is enabled only if you want to be able to use the printer from another computer in which you'll have to set up a network giving each computer a name for the computers to communicate with each other. check out the home networking help on your computer.. print sharing it has nothing to do with getting on the net.

Check your firewall settings to see if pings are being blocked.
