Time is a dimension similar to space. When you move forward in space, the space behind you doesn't disappear. Likewise the time you've moved through isn't gone, but unlike space dimensions, there's no way to go back to it.

Just like you can change the rate you move through space, you can change the rate you move through time by special relativity. In a sense, you can either go through space or time or some combination. If you're moving near the speed of light through space, then you'll have almost no "motion" through time. If you're sitting still in space, then you're moving through time at the full normal rate.

Time is only a concept based upon memories (that is what we call the past) and projected memories (called the future). That is why it isn't real, so it actually doesn't go anywhere at all. Its a complete psychological fabrication of the human mind. Just a concept, nothing more.

Okay, I am going to add something here inspired by the person who answered after me: Time implies space and space implies time. They are interconnected. So, if time can be a psychological phenomenon then space is also a psychological phenomenon. It might just be that our perception of reality is not accurate because we are seeing it through a fragment (rather than as one big picture). Maybe the universe is just an enormous thought and that we could equate that with a "dimension". I don't think that we should make any assumptions that either time or space are reality because, by definition, shouldn't reality be something that doesn't change? Anyway, just something to chew on.

It goes the same place it came from. That is, the illusion (yes, Virginia) that we are advancing on the future and it reaches the present and then passes back into the past, is a learned response to our functioning in the world. In actuality, all we have is the present, which is the same as eternity, when it encompasses the knowledge of the complete past and future combined into the present moment. At that point nothing moves.

There are two answers here that are right; one is about Einstein's time as a dimension and the other about Newtonian psychological time. If you can think of a connection between the two truths, that can be tested and verified, you will be a genius and probably win the Nobel Prize in Physics.

ineeddono has it right in his comment that the universe (space-time) may be psychological. Now figure out a way to test this hypothesis scientifically and I'll recommend you for the Nobel Prize in physics.
