It is a fight case, with only 4 strong witnesses (2 of whom were the "victims") All have same very general story, but also several conflicting details.

There are ways to tell (and I don't mean lie detector tests) if someone is lying, and unless they have spent a lot of time practicing how to hide their tells, a skilled interrogator should be able to get to the truth... the problem is that most law enforcement agencies don't have skilled interrogators despite what you may have seen on TV. All the really good ones work for the NSA, CIA, FBI or DHS, and the really really good ones freelance.

The prosecution has to prove its case beyond doubt, not even beyond reasonable doubt. Otherwise there cannot be a conviction.
