You don't need a network adapter for the slim ps2, as it's built in.

You will need to connect it using an ethernet cable to a router.

You will need to have broadband internet with a speed of at least 512kb

Yes it is free to play online.

Why would you need it for the slim PS2? The slim PS2 comes with the network adapter built in so you can get online access.

The network adapter is for the original PS2 so people can play online. But when Sony decided to make the slimline PS2, the network adapter was built into the slimline PS2.

Slimline has already built in it, but you'd have to connect it to the modem. (Cable, DSL). Depends where your computer is, you'd have to get a wireless router. Ask around @ Best Buy, or Circuit City.
