you can give him an overdose of anesthesia, take a small container of tank water add 5 drops of clove essential oil( availbale at the healthfood store) shake well add the fish, it will put it to sleep peacefully without pain. Freezing a fish was often perscribed way of euthanasia but freezing the fish is really a slow painful death for the fish, as all of its cells are ripped apart by ice crystals. What ever you do DO NOT flush a live fish.

i have heard of horror stories with the clove oil method, and it not working fully, fish jumping out of it and even fish waking up from it!
really the quickest way to dispatch a fish is to severe the spine or puncture the brain, it's also the most gruesome way unfortunately. but it's often the quickest way (of course if it's done quickly!). if you can't do it, i'm sure a teenage boy would gladly volunteer, i've always found they relish such an opportunity! the best way is to take the fish out in a container of water, ready some damp kitchen towel on some newspaper. put the fish on the kitchen towel, quickly wrap him in the kitchen towel and then the newspaper, and then drop something heavy very heavy or with larger fish a knife, aim for the head, if this is done quickly and firmly the fish will be gone.
dispose of either by burial in the garden or in the regular rubbish bin. do not flush. it may a) get into the waterways which is unwise if the fish was sick, b) the fish won't die instantly, he'll be burnt by chemicals in the sewer system first or c) block your toilet.

you can put the fish in a small bucket of ice water or in the freezer. I have never done this but most people I talk to do it, its fast and effective. The fish just goes to sleep, no pain.

Use clove oil, and while he's under anestesia, use the freezer method to make sure he's gone. Flushing fish is bad. They can end up stuck in a dry pipe and die from suffocation, or they can make it to the septic tank water and die from all the horrible chemicals and such.

Put the fish in a small container of tank water and put that in the freezer. The fish will die with no pain. Sorry to hear your fish is dying.

dont do it, he loves life just curl up to him, give him bread and see if the vets can do anything to ease the pain other then putting him to sleep, dont put him to sleep he might have a longer life then you think and i know how painful this is so get a new fish and when shes gone you'll still have the new fish with you.

let it be. It'll die in it's own time. I know it's painful but there is no nice way of killing a fish.
