I had recently picked up a guitar in the summer. Im 11 years old. Im not bad at it, i dont know why, but i have a thing for computers and music, so i taught myself how to play guitar, but i think i have started some bad habits. I while ago, i was having problems with alternate picking so i tried to find a way that worked for me and it ended up with me holding the pick with my pointer AND middle finger. I have never seen anyone else ever do that, and i am wondering if i should start over learning guitar with holding the pick, 1 fingered. I am really trying to learn canon rock, but right now im having some stop in my guitar learning. Im not getting anywhere anymore, i Cant get past this part in my lead guitar book. Should i get a music teacher, switch to 1 fingered pick holding, or is this a natural phase in guitar learning and it has nothing to do with me holding the pick that way and it is perfectly normal. And also could someone list other bad habits i may be doing? please help me.

I have been playing guitar since I was your age... I am 18 now ,
I dont believe in bad habits with the guitar.... those bad habits are styles and what makes the guitarist unique , If holding the pick with 2 fingers is what is comfortable for you , then dont change that... Although holding the pick like that seems like it might hinder some strumming techniques , but if you feel like you can do every technique you want to with your unique style , then that is not the problem ... sometimes learning out of the book gets hard... and it's really easy to get stuck ... Infact I gave up on books and just played by ear , but that is not cut out for some people... my question for you is , what part of the book cant you get past? does it have to do with strumming? or fretting?
because if it has to do with the rythem and how you strum the strings , then it could be how your holding the pick , but if has to do with fretting then your probably just stuck , and the best thing to do when you are stuck is try learning from other books or internet resources, things you havent learned yet and then go back to that part in the book once you are a little more skilled.
well I hope that helps... and good luck!

I learned to play yhe guitar without a pick.Finger picking. When I started with band and electrified my guitar I had to learn to use pick.I hold mine laying on my index finger with thumb over it.You`ll feel funny at first but you will get use to it.And yes if you want to play better then hire a teacher or watch others play. You can learn a lot by watching other types of quitar players.Good luck.

It really is personal preference. If you prefer holding a pick, go ahead and use a pick - if it works better for you, don't let anyone tell you otherwise (but do make sure you're holding it right). I personally prefer using a pick, it gives me a lot more power while strumming and stops my fingers getting cut up :)

What fingers you use to hold the pick don't matter as much as your angle of attack on the strings. If it's comfortable for you, don't worry about it, but try to keep your pick angled at about 45 degrees from the strings instead of resting flat on them.
