By blood we are related - brother, sister, aunt, uncle. But it isn't blood that makes us "family." Family is where I learn and grow in a safe environment, where I am encouraged to explore, where I am protected from danger, and where I can leave yet always know I can come back and have a home.
Then give some examples. I love writing, but kind of stuck - hard to take yourself out of a topic like this one. When you say great topic about family, I don't know if that means you want to focus on one thing - relationships, encouragement, history. Especially if you're family situation isn't a traditional family (Mom, Dad and kids). If it is different, that might be a focus.
Or maybe there's a grandparent or some other relative that has had a big impact on you. You've listened to stories and it's inspired you or they did things that surprised you. I learned my grandmother was into sports - all sports, back in the 30s when that wasn't a huge thing. She also got divorced when my Dad was 1 and raised him a number of years alone. She had 14 brothers and sisters. When you hear the stories, you can picture it all and then look at where someone is now and how this affected your parent and then you.
I also was recently speaking to a woman about her childhood. She told me her family was on a train from California to Oklahoma and, being black, they had to sit in the last car (this was the 60s). That blew me away. I was amazed and disturbed by this. Her mother is African American and her father was Cherokee (Native American.) She had to live with what most of us have only read about or seen pictures of. Something like this is a great starting point - a stepping stone you can build on.

Well, you could write about how kind they are (if they aren't, you might just want to lie). Or perhaps how unfair they are, but that's more difficult, because a lot of adults disagree with younger ones.
Here's a start (to how kind your family is)
My family means the world to me. Not only because they're kind, and smart, but because they treat me well. I believe that you shouldn't love or like someone because of what they have or what they can do, but because of who they are. That's what my family is like. A lot of my friends like me because I'm good at sports; I feel left out. But my family loves me for who I am. That's great, and...
I hope you can continue on from there.
Hope this helps!
PS: If I did bad, don't judge me too harshly. I'm ten years old in grade six, and my mother always said I'm poor in my English.

Family,
What are we without our family, they love and accept us for what and who we are. They pick you up when you are down they are there when nobody else cares. and just as you think life isn't really worth much, you look around you and feel blessed that you have someone who will always reach a hand out and tell you they love you and have your back no matter what.
