i drive mustang stick shift and the car takes gas like paris hilton takes you know what.
u will use less gas if you drive in a high gear. the best way to tell is by listing or by looking at the RPM.s the less noisy or lower RPMs is a good thing.
i mostly drive in the city and i used to cruise in third gear around 35-40mph....i tried something different and started to cruise in 4th gear around 40-45mph and now i save about 10 dollars every 3 days.
p.s. to save more gas....at low speed (usually close to a signal) always put your car in a higher gear. the car will pick up slow but u will save gas. for example. if you are cruising in 3rd around 30mph and had to slow down/go neutral because of a signal....as long as your car is going reasonably fast (10-30mph) put your car back in 3rd instead of 2nd when resuming your driving. (you might have to completely stop at the signal, in which case u would have to go to the 1st) but resume your previously selected gear as long as u are moving at a reasonable speed (which is different for every car). long story short...it is always better to select a higher gear then lower one.
good luck.

The lower the rpms the less gas it is burning, so you are better off in a higher gear. HOWEVER, not too high because that puts a strain on your engine, any savings on gas would be more than eaten up by blowing your engine out. By not having an automatic transmission to run you are saving energy right there. It is against the law to take your car out of gear and coast downhill or coast to a stopsign or stoplight, it subtracts from your ability to control the car.

Well when you say a lower gear are you referring to 1st gear as opposed to 5th? Or are you saying with a lower final drive gear? Typically driving in lower gears such as 1st will not lower your mpg ratio; however, your driving style will have an affect. If you're accelerating nomally throughout the gears you shouldn't have a problem. But heavy acceleration will result in higher rpm's in any gear and will certainly consume more fuel.

No, you use less gas. Engines become more efficient as the throttle approaches wide open. This means that the throttle butterfly is no longer restricting the air flow into the engine. Normally, the engine uses some of its power to suck the air in, and this extra effort costs a little of your power, and therefore some fuel. This is why diesel engines are so efficient - they don't have a throttle butterfly, and so they don't waste as much of their power simply sucking at the air. Basically, you are allowing more gas into the engine during each revolution of the motor, but this is more than offset by having the engine spin more slowly.

Well since you burn more gas at a higher speed you will burn more gas in a higher gear.

no, untill you hit speed then you have to fight wind force and it will burn more to overcome that.
