my computer is part of a LAN. They just turned off the firewall & auto updates. now there's no firewall at all in every pc. The ISP provider did it without any explanation. i am not sure if this is normal here in Thailand. Can they control incoming/outgoing data from each pc to their server?

I presume you are talking about a company with networked computers, and their should be a corporate firewall, and the configuration for updates should be done by the company IT person. Do not firewall your computer without input from the IT person.

I would turn the firewall back on but make sure you set up exceptions for file and printer sharing and possibly ICS.
I would turn the automatic updates on but set it to only download and install on your command. This way it'll tell you that there are updates but you get to choose whether to install or not.
