I answered this question not to long ago. Here is my answer again so I don't have to retype it all again.

Snakes are fascinating creatures. They are beautiful and amazing. Having both a ball python and a Colombian boa I can personally say that I enjoy them both more than I do our dog. They are easy to care for and are wonderful to watch and hold. There is something so amazing about watching them move. To me it is NOT about the 'shock and awe' factor. In fact very, very few people know that we even own them and even fewer people have actually seen them. They can be wonderful ways to educate younger people not only about captive snakes but also wild ones.

Indeed they are different from 'normal' pets in that they don't really show emotion and you can't play fetch or have them chase a feather around the floor. To me that is part of the enjoyment of them. They are actually easier to care for than our dog or the rats we keep. They are even easier to care for than a cat (as we had one of those too). They don't need walked, pet, fed daily, large yards to run in, several piles a day to clean up, chew on things, tear up things, or (contrary to popular belief if cared for RIGHT) smell.

Also if you think about it, isn't just eating and sleeping in the cage you have them in really all most caged pets do? Snakes can be taken out and handled and, on nice days, even be taken outside and let to roam in the grass or small trees. When was the last time you saw someone let their hamster, rat, or any other small rodent or bird loose in their yard?

My question to you is why own any other animal?

When I was a little child growing up on the farm, I was always told that snakes were bad. No one realized that I had bad eyesight (since corrected with laser surgery) until the day I was picking up rocks. I picked up a rock that was soft and cold. I was handling a snake for the first time and didn't even know it. To make matters even more interesting, it was a prairie rattlesnake, I still love the hots. This started a life long obsession for me, this is why I own them.

I own a ball python that I've had since a baby, and he has a lump towards the end of his tail that is actually a deformity in his spine. It hasn't gone away and I don't think it ever will. But if its a bite, just put some neosporin on it 2 times a day. Sometimes it could also be his food that is still solid that you are feeling. Word of advise, if you are going to feed him live prey, stun the prey beforehand. I fed a live rat to my red tail and she got bit pretty good and it left a scar, so now i stun her prey. Its not animal abuse, its just protecting your loved animal. :)

Well let's see...

1. If you get the right snake, they are gentle, friendly, and even loving.
2. They're beautiful.
3. They don't make noise.
4. They don't scratch up the furniture, shed everywhere, or pee/poop where they aren't supposed to.
5. They don't steal food off your table or jump up on your friends.
6. They're interesting to watch - they have their own personalities, you know!
7. Visitors and friends are always asking questions and wanting to see them. (Great topic of conversation.)
8. They are cheap to feed and care for once they're all set up (unless you're breeding them.)

How's that for a start?

What is really surpising is that snakes have a personality. I mean they don't roll over like a dog, but they get attached to you, they want attention, they express emotions just like cats and dogs do. They are a very worthwhiled pet and I am glad that I got over my fear and got one. Now I have 5 and counting.

I love reptiles-I've always had a fascination with them, especially snakes. I have a 4.5 ft ball python who is just the sweetest snake ever. He makes me want to grow up and become a herptologist.

Because it's fascinating.
Once you passed the disgust and fear of snakes, they're just like other animals. Just needs a little more precautions.

Just like there are dog and cat people, there are people that prefer their pets with scales and cold blood.
