you need to go to your county's sheriff's website and follow the link they provide, if not contact your sheriff's office by phone with a name and description, they should be able to help you. It is public information, so if they(s.o. people) are rude let them know it!
I lived by a man that spend 4 years in prison for attempted rape and noone(neighbors/landlords or the county)let me know about him, even though it's the law. At the time I worked at a State Park and worked with a lot of law enforcement employees, if it wasn't for me asking them to check on him and giving them the address, then I may have not moved and could have possibly been his next victim.
Be careful and good luck to you and your friend, don't let yourself become a victim, don't be alone with this person because once you seem vulnerable and naive you are a perfect target.

Google it...type in your state and then sex offender.
Example: Google.com
typed: Florida sex offender list (or registry)
search came up with the first one being the Fl website:
http://offender.fdle.state.fl.us/offender/homepage.do;jsessionid=FTJZB1Jv1qJGJV1LzdGJWJn1RpJJ8899Qs6JrYnbLpJcPvJgbfg1!-1267427397
Here is the site to pick your state:
http://offender.fdle.state.fl.us/offender/Registries.jsp
Good luck

www.nsopr.gov. That website should provide names, locations, and pics of the offenders.
