First of all, many if not most of the people of the U.S.A. care about the suffering of others, but they like most people don't care very much anything that is not directly related to them.

Second of all, it's the mass media (including the news) that care more about reporting Anna Nicole Smiths death, than the American Military's Deaths. Of course, once they got the order to focus on the American Military's Deaths again, Anna Nicole Smith's death will be forgotten temporary.

As you can see, the mass media don't represent the voice of the people, instead it's the voice that want to guide the people.

I don't buy the 'they only want to sell stuff and make money' argument, since making profit seem isn't high in their priority, on the other hand getting money from sponsors are high in their priority.

The mass media often give depressing things that no one wants, but they still make money? Can you say money laundering?

The reason many people talked about Anna Nicole Smith's death is because it's the main course of what some mass media offered.

You definetly know something is odd is happening when Steve Irwin was offered a State Funeral by the government of Australia and he was reported in the same level as a politician.

Really, most people don't care at all about Anna Nicole Smith's death. At least, no more than any single other person. I'm not particularly concerned about it, are you? Is anyone other than her baby's daddies?

As for the reason people SEEM to care more for it is because it is shown all over the media, because the media is biased and tries to sell fluff stories instead of important ones. Our news system is set up to never show the bad stuff that our country does, only the good things. Why don't we talk about Afghanistan anymore? Why didn't we help with the Rwandan genocide? Why don't we help feed starving children all over the world? That sort of "News" would make people sad, and the networks would lose viewers and then advertisers and then money, and there wouldn't be any news. It all comes down to money.

Anna Nicole Smith is a sad media scapegoat cash-cow, and we can focus on her and say, "At least I'm not Anna Nicole Smith" instead of focusing on the environment, starving orphans and out of work actors (that last part is a joke...)

Well, my opinion is the world has lost a truly great Hollywood conversation piece. I do not think at all that her death is fake at all. With the age of press, it would be harder and harder to fake your death, especially a celebrity death like this. Whether her death is linked to Trimspa or not, I do not know, but I will tell you this, if you are a stockholder in Trimspa's parent company, sell, sell, and sell more. Sell til it is all gone because no matter what the truth really is, the public is going to link Trimspa to the death of Anna Nicole and the Trimspa era is official dead today. The whole diet pill era is dying, and took a big hit today. In a twisted way, all these exercise videos are going to get a boost because people are going to be scared of Trimspa and its evil sisters. Anna was a beautiful woman and I for one will truly miss her.

I have to say that you should get I star from every person that answers this question. I don't think Americans care more about Anna Nicole Smiths death than they do about American Military deaths. I think it looks that way because her death is getting a lot of press lately.

News is news and if the media doesn't play the story then people will go somewhere else for it. It's not that the country cares more about Anna over the other deaths or tragedies in our lives, people are just more familiar with her than Joe Smith from that place they never heard of.

Anna Nicole sells papers.

First, though, did you know that illegal aliens kill four times more U.S. civilians than war-related causes kill our soldiers? Why doesn't the news report that?

Now, on the numbers, let's keep it closer to reality. In Iraq, the heroic fallen now total 3,100 and something. Not the "millions" you alluded to.

If you've taken statistics classes, you probably already know that the chances of survival in Iraq are higher than for kids in many of our inner city schools.

As for the tragedies toward children, the first is when a couple conceives one without some certainty they can raise it. Most of my friends from school have never had kids and it's getting too late. They tell me they wanted nothing more but knew they couldn't afford to give the kids a good life. Now THAT'S responsibility and sacrifice.

Most of the millions of kids who starve are born to people who make a conscious decision to get pregnant knowing full well they can't afford to feed even themselves.

Because it sells and because the neocons run the corporate media and they want to divert the countries attention from the war so they are harping on Anna's death.

Last May I had my nails done..(maybe this is why I haven't been back since) my husband and I listen to talk radio and are always talking about the war and current events, politics, etc. He is a Viet Nam Vet and has strong opinions re: the war. So there I sit thinking about the war...and there are 5 other women...and they are all discussing the birth of Angelina's baby in Africa...hoping that she won't have any complications in the birth...I couldn't believe my ears...I thought...how incredibly shallow that that is the only thing that they could find to talk about with everything going on in the world...but some people want to be ostriches and just stick their heads in the sand...and...others like to facilitate this by running non stories to divert our attention from the real stories...why do you think we have never seen any flag draped casket? Because that didn't go over very well in Viet Nam...so Bush wasn't going to repeat that mistake...everything move is very calculated like a little chess game...and we are the pawns

Our country does care more about celebrities, and that is a fact. The main reason i believe is because we envy them, we want to be them. NO its not right, not at all. Then we as American citizens need to get our heads out of our A@!. I don't care if you don't believe we should be in the war. You should support our troops, and ill be D$@nd if i wont morn a soldiers death just because i don't think he should have been there. Do you anti-war people think that they really want to be there, they are there for you, and they are doing what they are being told is right.

Because all of those other people are faceless. The news reports "an American GI was killed in Iraq today", but we never know anything about that person. Anna Nichole was all over the media for years so it feels like she is someone we know.

I don't think it's Americans as much as American Media. But if Americans seem a little more interested in her death than in our role in the Mideast, it's probably because we've been force-fed war images throughout the media for more than five years. We need a break every now and then, even if it's another tragedy.
