If you study and do your research you will see that the "Latino"and the black people have alot in common. We were both enslaved by a race of savages. In the Caribbean and Latin America it was the Spaniards among many who raped our ancestors and in the North American Continent it was the Anglos. It is nice to know your history and the details regarding your family, but remember the whole concept of race is nonsense. We are all alike. There exist a division not only of race but mosty of wealth. If you "feel" mosty black then that is cool, and if you "feel" mostly hispanic then that should be cool too. If,on the other hand, you want to blend the two then PALANTE!

Do not hide anything from your mom. You may find she will assist you with finding about your latino heritage. Ask her why you have not been taught about being 1/2 latino, but know who you are as you've grown into your black family. Tell her you are not abandoning your black heritage, you just want to know both worlds. She decided to have you with a latino father, she owes it to you to at least allow you to learn both sides of your family history. Also ask why she would be so angry for seeing you research your latino background. Someday you will find out eventually, and she cannot hide the fact who you are.

Explain to your mom that you are proud of being both black and Latino, and just because you are learning about your Latino side does not mean you are neglecting your black side or that you will start despising black people. Try telling her the reasons your proud of being black and the reasons your proud of being Latino. I'm sure if you reassure her, she'll see your way and stop feeling "threatened".

You are absolutely right for wanting to know exactly who you are by exploring where you come from. The trick is getting your mom to understand your point of view...I don't mean to pry but are your parents not together? Maybe the reason for her lash out is b/c she may have feelings of betrayal...uhm like, your choosing your dad over her...
Talk with her and let her know that you would like to understand both of your cultures and your endeavor is not a slate toward her or her parenting...In fact, it is NOT about her at all, its about you becoming a man. It's been said, "One can never know where he's going, if he doesn't know where he's been". Help her to realize that she has taught you a great deal about your black ancestry and now its time to learn of your Latino ancestry...Also ask her if she'll help you..Good Luck!

I am biracial too, my mom is black and dad is latino, and she feels the same way...when a latina woman recently offered to teach me spanish and to cook mexican food, my mom was irked and offended...you need to remind her, nicely and kindly, that you are not black. You are not latino. You are both. Chromosomally, ethnically. You must know who you are..

Your mother is obviously very proud of her heritage and culture and feels that you should be equally proud. However, you should not feel obligated to hide your inquisitiveness about your Latino heritage just to please your mother. Another thing to consider is that your appearance may favor your black heritage and, since it does, your mother may be defining your heritage based on outward appearance.

Mums can be such a pain!
Just tell her not to be ridiculous and that you're only checking it out because she neglected to teach you about it as you were growing up.
She's the one with an issue, not you, so don't even think about feeling bad.
Don't let her dump stupid guilt trips on you.
Be nice the way you put it to her though :) of course ;)

She probably feels uncomfortable because they intimidate her for some reason. It is your right to have some knowledge of that side. You are mature enough to pursue this with or without her approval.
