I'm a critical care nurse working in the graveyard shift for many, many years. Personally, I didn't gain so much weight because of my commitment to healthy living. I refuse to be obese. Obesity entails a lot of problems from poor self image ,to multiple health problems.

However, most of my co -workers are on the heavy side. The main reason is lack of exercise. Erratic hours for sleeping.and eating; There are a lot of potlucks at night. And they are forever eating. during their break time. Or they would go out for cigarette breaks.

I saw one episode on TV's "Biggest Losers. A group of nurses working the graveyard shifts had the most amt of weight to lose.

Here are possible quesitons for your research?

As soon as you get home from work; so you eat or immediately go to sleep? How many meals do you eat in the course of a day? What kinds of foods do you normally eat ? What time do you normally eat? How much exercise do you do? How many hours of sleep do you get when you're working nights? Do you view yourself as fat or slender? Do you eat a lot of junk foods?

After work ,do you guys often go out for breakfast with the rest of the gang or camaderie? How often do you guys get together for parties? What kinds of foods are usually prepared during these parties? What kinds of foods are served at these potlucks at nights? How much coffee do you drink? How many packets of sugar do you put in your coffee?

Do you work in a high stressed area? What is your normal way of coping with stress? How much do you eat? Do you consume a lot of starchy foods and sweets and pastries and cakes or doughnuts? What specialty or units do you work in the hospitals?

Hope this helps!

Ask about pot lucks. When and where they're supposed to eat, and if they actually follow those rules.
I'm out of pt. care, but remember that there were a lot of things done that were definitely not officially approved. The times were so hectic that the nurses would have a lit cigarette in one hand and a fork in the other. In order to feed some patients we had to " break into the kitchen" to prepare food . The union would not allow us to cook, but management would not call kitchen staff in to cook if they "forgot to leave a platter". We'd cook up something extra. Management looked the other way on shortcuts we had to do to make time for paperwork. Ask about after work gatherings. We often had a breakfast group. They probably can't or shouldn't admit some perks.

That shift is usually not so busy. you could ask :-

The kind of ward worked on
The regularity of treatments required
Number of IV's to check
How large is the ward (in terms of distances covered during work)
The severity of illnesses treated on the ward.
