Valentine’s Day

A masochist created Valentine’s Day
Just so that the world can say
Hey- look at all those lonely people
Driven to throwing themselves off church steeples
Red, white and pink are everywhere
Tears of lonely singles choke the air
Those in relationships don’t escape this mess
They’re supposed to be happy, but are still depressed
They take this day to “show they care”
And ignore each other the rest of the year

On every page of the internet
Hearts pop up, and eyes are wet
We spend millions on candy and cards
No one can avoid this farce
Companies make so much money
I find the whole thing vaguely funny
And yet, I’m always so miserable
Why do we all buy into this bull?

I say, screw St. Valentine
He still met a grisly demise
Love didn’t save him, he was sent to the lions
Because of him, every February
We all end up moping and weary
Because we have no one with which to share
This most depressing day of the year

So why do we still celebrate
This vapid, outdated holiday?
We all hope for true love today
But it won’t really come our way
Just because it’s Valentine’s day
Just because we put up red hearts
Doesn’t mean they don’t fall like darts
On our silly, empty dreams
That’s all that this holiday means

So have a happy Valentine’s Day
I hope you just remember
That this is about as realistic
As expecting world peace come December!

Note: Sarcasm implied.

We have all probably been where you are with your poem, but fall in love and you will be singing another tune.

Whether we like it or not, humans need love, or at least to believe in love. Somehow our careers and education don't keep us warm at night. Every human knows the black and white world of loneliness, but love comes along and fills your heart with a rainbow.

P.S. your poem was still very good! Keep up the writing!!

Wow, someone take the sleeping pills away from this girl. Bad break up recently? I like the first and second stanzas, but the rest seems forced and empty.

I would say I think you can do better than "throwing themselves off church steeples". It doesn't rhyme and I don't think it's ever happened. How about "lonely stiff...off cliffs"

The second stanza needs some work too. How about "...candy and cards...only to get our hearts broken into shards."

Third stanza, you just kinda gave up on rhyming all together. And so on...

very good poem, and I think people shoouldn't wait for valentines day to show love, they should show love ALL year round, just like everybody should be kind all year long, not just at christmas.
