The first person's answers are incorrect.
The second person is correct

1.Each is the subject of the verb. Receives is the correct verb
2. The correct verb is seems. The subject is really the act of(understood)carrying
3. Are is the correct verb. The subject is groups. If there were only one group, the correct verb would have been is but because there are multiple groups, are is correct
4. The correct verb is are. The compound subject of this sentence is a spree and bath. Shopping and warm are adjectives modifying the subject.
5. The correct word is wants. The subject is Mike or Ike which indicates that it is only ONE person who wants to throw the party. If BOTH Mike AND Ike were throwing the party, the correct verb would be want. The examples are very good and very tricky. Thanks for giving me the opportunity to review some of my grammar rules.
