The chronology of these events may not be correct but...at some point the United Staes suppoted the Taliban with weapons and money to help them fight the Russian invasion.
The Taliban become the hero's so to speak. The Russian's finally gave up and abandoned the conquest of Afganistan.
At some point either during this struggle with the Russians or after they had pulled out the Taliban got into another conflict.
This one the United States would not support. Our government dropped the Taliban like a hot potato...totally turning our backs on them. The Taliban got their butts kicked and so did the Afgan people.
Remembering that the Taliban were orignally Afgan partiots fighting the Rusians The Afgan people felt abandoned and they been.
However the Taliban or what was left of them remained to fight another day. Clerics sought Jihad against the United States for abandoning the Afgan people. They began receiving aid from other sourses. The United States at some point labeled them terrorists as Alkida other such groups imported fighters, weapons and money. Much of the money used to finance this is from heroin production. Poppies grow like weeds there. Is has become a cash crop for them. Poppies are cultivated much like our wheat. The Taliban supports this. They are still somewhat the Afgan partoits in a since even thought their philosphy has changed. The new current government does not support either of these ideas. Alot of the Afgan people also feel this new government are merely puppets for the U.S. So the fight goes on.

The movement was not that popular at all they just had guns.
They also appeared to offer stablity, and since Afghanistan had undergone around 30 years of civil war even a bad government in power seemed like a good idea. The concept of a unifying factor (religion) allowed the various warlords to stop fighting each other, to some extent. Therefore the reduction in violence was popular despite the many crazy ideas the Taliban had. Other local powers could not unify the country due to percieved tribal loyalty causing distrust among other ethnic subgroups.
Once the US got involved in Afghanistan the Taliban self destructed quite quickly. Although there is still occasional violence in the country, it is actually surprising how safe it has become considering only a minority of the population actually remember peace after 30 years of civil war. The outside US invasion has installed a government to become that is far more multicultural within the country and therefore less feared as a power grab by one race by minority groups.

It doesn't have an enormous base of support. A few thousand people are its supporters.
The Taliban was initially welcomed because they drove out the Soviets, and stopped lawlessness and corruption. However, they also turned the country into an Islama-fascist nightmare when an ultra-strict version of Islam ruled everyones lives. I think their rule was, "If it's fun, it's prohibited."

Hillbillies are hillbillies where ever they are. They are proud and they believe that they are defending there way of life. I admire them for this but they are wrong. They will not accept the modern world and they will continue to aid those that convince them that we seek to destroy them and their way of life. The fact that we don't has little to do with it now because we may have to to insure that they do not allow terrorists to use them to harm others in the world.
Their support is not in Afghanistan it is in the Pakistani border region. And they receive funding from all over the middle east.

They control by force and with money. And there's no alternative 'authority' outside of the capital city. They still control vast areas of Afghanistan.

Well because if the "ordinary" people don't support them, they kill them. Not that difficult of a choice.

The Taliban have always ruled by fear. They murder people when they don't fear them.
