That would be a big a** mistake. The Iranians would overwhelm the troop surge in no time. The Iranian regular armed forces has an estimated 420,000 troops in three branches: Ground Forces, 350,000 troops; Navy, 18,000 sailors; and Air Force, 52,000 airmen. If you include the Revolutionary Guard they have upward of 540,000- 4 time the US forces in Iraq now and 25 times the troop surge levels.

20 thousand is not an invasion force, not even close. Even if you count the support troops it doesn't rise to an invasion. I think the surge is a reinforcement just like they are saying it is.

I think it is a show of resolve and force - I don't think with three combat ready aircraft carriers off their coast, the troop surge is really Ahmadinejad's or the terrorists' primary concern.
I don't believe we will need any boots on the ground to effectively render Iran a non-issue.

no the amount of personnel and the type of troops they are really wouldn't do well in open terrain against mechanized forces like the Iranians

We aren't sending enough to crack down in Iraq, let alone a full invasion into Iran.
