Some fish do. I'm not sure about goldfish though. I had guppies, they have live births.

They lay eggs, then they promptly begin to eat every eggs within sight. If you want to breed I suggest you get two tanks. One for spawning and the other to move the parents into. The parent's tank should be 30+ gallons as these are goldfish. Goldfish do not form pairs, they just breed when ready. The males get tubercles on their gills when they are ready to breed. If these fish are under 3-4 inches there will most likely be no breeding, if you want babies you will have to get adults.

All fish are egg layers.

HOWEVER some fish are oviperous, some are ovoviperous. In the former, the eggs hatch inside the mom and the babies come out live. In the latter, the eggs are laid.

Or do I have that backwards?

IAE, I coulda sworn goldfish lay eggs, but all I have is tropical fish books and, alas, goldfish are not tropical.

I'm just a wealth of knowledge, ain't I? :)

Not all fish lay eggs... I know this because one of my fish just gave birth to about 25 live fish yesterday and I freaked out... I am assured by my mother (who's pretty switched on) than it's a common misconception that fish only lay eggs...

FIsh lay eggs some species hatch inside the cavity so the live young fish exit via that cavity. that is not live birth it is a form of protecting the eggs inside the fish. So the eggs are not laid but kept inside this cavity then they hatch and swim free.

Goldfish eggs aren't even fertilized inside the fish. They lay them and then they fertilized them after. Your fish probably pooped something out that it ate.

fish do give birth to live fry. The eggs hatch inside them sometimes. goldfish do give birth to live fry or maybe lay eggs somewhere and it hatched., (so do guppies, sword fish and a hell of a lot of fish I have with me. )Angel fish lay eggs. Very annoying.

Well, goldfish lay eggs, that's all there is to it. Either your fish isn't a goldfish, or you didn't see the eggs before they hatched. Some fish lay eggs, some have live babies, but goldfish certainly lay eggs
