In analyzing the character traits of the writer by their style of calligraphy iit is often revealing to know the meaning of the writing.
So whilst they do not need to be good spellers a knowledge of the language they are analyzing is important to the accuracy depth and perception of the conclusions they draw,

No, just observation skills. They will be looking at how the words are written (identifying characteristics) not the spelling (although they can look at if the person misspells a word the same way).

Yes, theyed have to be if they we're to call it a career. Imagine a so-called "writing expert" not knowing how to spell 'business' or 'rhythm.' He or she would end up looking like a fool.
