The best present is "The First Days of School" by Dr. Wong. It's a very helpful book to those teachers just starting out. Also, don't go running out to buy a bunch of books for the classroom unless you know what grade she's teaching next year (books really range with age and can be expensive!) If you want to help out with a classroom library, try giving a gift card for a book store or go to various rummage sales and get them cheap! Another good idea for a new teacher are the borders for bulletin boards and perhaps a set of pre-made letters for bulletin boards. (Bulletin boards make the room look cheerful and personalized.) Also, any teacher loves the office organizers to keep the room neat and tidy. One of the best ideas I've heard of are "emergency kits" for teachers. It includes a small bottle of Tylenol, 2 maxi pads (especially for those that have students entering puberty), bandaids, mints, a gift card for a nearby fast food place, and anything else that you can think of that might be forgotten but helpful to someone who's always busy! If your friend's going into elementary education, a big pack of stickers are always nice (especially the ones that are special, such as smelly or metalic looking stickers!) No matter what age you're teaching, stamps are also nice to have--they can be as simple as a smile stamp for good work done or you can have the "Parent's Signature __________" stamp to save on writing something that would be repeatedly written. And if all else fails, the classic "Teacher" coffee mug is always appreciated just because it has the word "teacher" on it!

Hi there. I used to be a after-school program teacher. Here are something I will need as a teacher:
1/ prepare my lecture-have a plan of what I am going to do with the students
2/ depends on the students' age, and plan out activities to keep them busy
3/ depends on the students age, and have equipments, toys, games, papers, pencils for my students
4/ treats-candies, stickers-to reward my students. good impressions on my students count!
5/ work on my public speaking skills and learn to control of the situation. Don't let these students walk all over me.
I hope this help.

Books and supplies, the best thing is to get her gift cards to Barnes and Nobles or Borders so she can get hte books she needs. If there is a teachers store nearby that would also be a good choice. As we do not know what grade you are talking about it would be a good general choice. This is going to sound a bit funny but wallpaper that has books or childrens things on them is a good gift. I always use it to cover my bulletin boards ( I staple it up ) its washable and extremely durable and fadeproof as compared to contstruction paper.

Aside from what everyone else said, she could also use pillows, beanbag chairs, an area rug if it is not already provided, maybe even an old couch if available. It is a good idea for the students during free reading time to be able to have the option of being comfortable. In my experience, they are more likely to want to read than if they had to sit at their desks and read.

White board markers are a necessity!
Also, she will need storage bins, containers etc. And, of course books. A teacher can never have enough books! Go to amazon.com to order some.
Thanks for helping us teachers out!
F.y.i - NEVER EVER EVER give kids tylenol or any medication. Its AGAINST the law.

She needs daily routines, organizational systems, well-planned lessons, and a willingness to build relationships with the students. She also needs to communicate her expectations and limits to the students and have clear, consistent consequences for when students cross the line. Then she can buy the fun stuff like white board markers and sticky notes.
